Six Weeks in the Sioux Tepees: A Narrative of Indian Captivity
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (October, 1997)
Average review score:

This book gives a needed insight into 1862 ConflictSarah Wakefield, being an educated doctor's wife in 1862, had a lot more than many of the people who lived through the 1862 Uprising/Conflict, she was able to relate in a logical way what happened to her, without anger. She tells of the way she and her children were taken care of by Chaska and his family. How their lives were spared because of the Dakota family. Her words show another side of the story, how whites were saved by the Dakota. When many were saying they had been abused, Sarah told of care. When Chaska was hanged on 26th December she was understandably distressed, here was her saviour, who she had promised would be spared as she was, dead, through a quirk of fate. In 1997, I and another woman working on a Native American Committee to honor the dead of the conflict in Minnesota wrote to President Clinton asking for a pardon for Chaska, on Sarah Wakefield's behalf. Chaska's name should be cleared. It has been 136 years and he is still known as a man who abused women and children during a six week war. Read this story and if you feel the same way, please write to the President as well. Chaska saved Sarah's life, his name should at least be cleared of wrongdoing.Thank you.

The Sketchbook of Thomas Blue Eagle
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (March, 1901)
Average review score:

A Book To Dream OnThe story of a young Plains Indian who traveled to Europe in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Rodeo, this book is extraordinary and moving. The story is fun, but it is the illustrations that bring this book to the level of genuine art: the pictures are completely magical. This book transformed my day after reading it: I felt renewed by it's beauty and innocence.

Song of Wovoka

This is a fine little novel. This is a well-written, exciting novel which accurately portrays the worldview of Native Americans of the plains. It deserves five stars. I use it as a first-book-read in a Native American Religions course. It never fails to interest students in learning more about Native Americans, as it gives their history specific, three-dimensional characters, both compelling and repelling. Since I teach students, black and white, who have little understanding of the Native American experience or point of view, I am grateful to Earl Murray for providing such an easily accessible, romantic, action-oriented novel. It makes my intellectual seduction of them much easier. When I get to explaining specific worldview assumptions of Native Americans, it is always helpful to refer back to, for instance, the visions of Fawn-that-goes-dancing or Black Robe (Father Thomas). I highly recommend this small novel.

South Dakota Atlas & Gazetteer
Published in Paperback by DeLorme Publishing (January, 2001)
Average review score:

Can't get lost with this!I've used Delorme atlases without any problem on my excursions through other states, so I bought the South Dakota atlas last summer before my trip last September. As usual, everything in the atlas is clear and easy to read. My trip took me all across the state of South Dakota, including travel on many back roads. Not once did I wonder where I was or feel I was lost. These atlases are remarkable for their accuracy, and they have another winner with this one. Whether you've visiting the Black Hills, heading to Pierre, or want to get to Watertown, you can use any road confidently with this atlas. Highly recommended if you want to see any part of the state off I-90 or I-29!

Sturgis Stories: Celebrating the People of the World's Largest Motorcycle Rally
Published in Paperback by Kirk House Pub (01 March, 2002)
Average review score:

An inspiring, eye opening book. This is a cool book. The author captures through pictures and words what it means to participate in the Sturgis Rally. Through more than 25 stories, the author introduces the reader to the many folks drawn to Sturgis; to the diversity of the rally goers; to their bikes; to the stories they share; and to the freedom that brings them together.
Through each story I learned a bit more about what leads people, from all walks of life, to gather and celebrate true freedom. The book includes stories from people with names like Mad Max, Papa Smurf, Boodan and Joker but also tells the story more average riders like Ron and Sharon. I like the way the stories drew me into the life of each rider, the way it included young and old, men and women, and all variety of bikes.
The book is as engaging to look at as it is to read. I gave a copy of the book as a gift to my Harley friend and he loved it.
